Start Point Lighthouse, Devon Photography Locations #7
/Start Point Lighthouse lies in the stunning South Hams area of Devon, not far from Kingsbridge, it lies at grid reference SX829371
The lighthouse watches over Start bay from Dartmouth around to Salcombe and lies in a really lovely spot behind a cliff / ridge line which makes for some great compositions.
I have visited Start Point many times over the years and it really is a great place for watching the sunset or rise with the camera at hand.
The cliff / ridge line allows you to set up some great compositions looking down onto the lighthouse with the ocean in the background and the land dropping away either side.
Start point lighthouse is automated so there is no worry about sitting on top of the cliff and photographing away, the optics were also upgraded to a static LED in 2018, so you can get some nice light beams, without doing long exposures, although it's sad to see the sweep motion go.
Good for: Unique composition of the ridge line and lighthouse, great for panoramic shots, lovely seascape location, great shots can be had here with a drone, just a great place to visit.
Difficulty: 15min medium walk from the visitors car park at Start Point Lighthouse, hill can be a bit steep on the way back and cliff can be slippy.
The carpark is approx 15 mins from Slapton or 25 mins from Kingsbridge by car. The road to Start Point can be a little bumpy.
Location: From the carpark walk along the road to the lighthouse, just before you walk around the last corner before the lighthouse, turn right and walk up the steep ridgeway, there is a path but be very carefull as it can be slippy.
Alternately fork off earlier and walk along the top of the ridgeway that way you also get to walk past the great spikey tors on the way.
